Carrigtwohill couple Remik Kita and Sharon Harris in an Autogas powered car drove their way to an overall fifth place trophy at the first-ever Slovenian Eco Rally on 14th June 2014. Remik is co-owner and head mechanic at the Autogas Ireland conversion centre and Flogas Autogas filling station in the Harrington Industrial Estate, Tramore Road, Cork. Supported by Flogas, they were the only participants from Ireland at the Rally and with Remik driving and Sharon as co-driver, their Fiat 500L consumed only 14.6 litres of LPG across the 238km route. This, along with their other scores, won them the overall fifth place spot.
The Eco Rally, which promotes the use of cars with alternative methods of propulsion, featured contestants from 12 different countries competing across three categories - electric, hybrid and alternative fuel. Trophies were awarded to those scoring highest in terms of lowest fuel consumption, manoeuvrability and regularity (maintaining precise times and precise average speeds on various segments of a predefined route).
Remik said “The scenery was spectacular and although the route was mainly windy, mountain roads, our consumption rate was very good. The mountainous roads with no barriers at heights of 1,600 metres were quite terrifying and thrilling all at the same time!”
The Rally was sponsored by Prins, one of the world leaders in alternative fuel systems for cars. Their high quality systems are used by Autogas Ireland in converting cars from petrol to LPG.
Autogas Ireland in the Harrington Industrial Estate converts cars from petrol to autogas and operates a filling station offering Flogas Autogas at 79.9c a litre, which compares very favourably with the current average price of €1.57c a litre for petrol. Motorists spending €150-200 a month on petrol would save €75-100 a month following conversion and high mileage drivers could find themselves saving up to €400 a month. As a result, several hundred hard-pressed motorists and taxi drivers have made the switch ever since the company opened for business in late 2012.
