Flogas area representative Michael Keogh ‘stepped up to the plate’ to present the prizes at the Flogas Mayo Student Master Chef Competition on Thurs 7 May 2015 at the Mayo Abbey Cookery School, Mayo Abbey, Claremorris.

This year’s event focused on developing student talent and the competitors were students at Mayo Abbey Cookery School as well as Transition Year (TY) students from Colaiste Muire Secondary School in Tourmakeady.

 

Michael Keogh, area representative for Flogas Ireland, said, “A great day was had by all and congratulations to the team at Mayo Abbey and the Chefs of Mayo Club for all their hard work. As one of the leading suppliers of LPG to the hotel, restaurant and hospitality industry, Flogas is constantly seeking ways to encourage and promote culinary excellence so we were delighted to such a high level of budding talent on show”.

 

Mayo Abbey student Peter Philbin from Claremorris came 1st in the Vinnie O’Toole Memorial Chicken Dish class and the Hot & Cold Plated Dessert class, Bronagh Walsh from Ballyhaunis came second and Fiona Carroll from Westport came third.

 

The Hot or Cold Plated Dessert class was again won by Peter Philbin, with Olesja Kjaunite and Marek Janik, both from Castlebar, coming second and third respectively.

 

The Decorated Gateau class was won by Kathleen Staunton from Castlebar and Fiona Carroll took second place.

 

In the TY Chicken Class, Saoirse Barry from Claremorris came 1st, followed by Sinead Conway from Westport and Kate Hennessy from Partry.

 

Stephen Lenahan, head chef at Belleek Castle judged the Student Chef categories while Frank Lyons from the Chefs of Mayo and Ger Brady, chef at the West Wing in Tuam both judged the TY Chicken class. All the judges were impressed and amazed at the high stand and quality of dishes produced by both the Mayo Abbey and TY students and complimented them all on their skill.

 

The Mayo Abbey Cookery School is a charitable non-profit making organisation run by a voluntary management committee, with a shop open to the public on Fridays selling scones, pastries and organic vegetables grown in-house.
